What is the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)?
The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a federal health insurance program that provides affordable healthcare coverage for children in families with low to moderate income.
It was created to ensure that all children have access to the care they need, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
Congress established the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in 1997 as part of the Balanced Budget Act.
It is managed by both state and federal governments and funded through a combination of state funds and matching federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The state manages CHIP according to its rules, and the program might have a different name depending on the region. For example, in N.Y., it’s called Child Health Plus, and in Arkansas, ARkids.
Overall, it provides health insurance coverage for children in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but too low to afford private health insurance plans.
What are the benefits included in the Children’s Health Insurance Program?
CHIP covers a wide range of medical services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and tests/treatments necessary for diagnosing or treating medical conditions or injuries. CHIP typically includes:
- Annual check-ups;
- Immunizations;
- Doctor visits;
- Hospital care;
- Dental and vision care;
- Prescriptions;
- Laboratory services;
- X-rays and emergency services.
Some states also extend this health insurance coverage to parents and pregnant women. Additionally, most states offer additional benefits such as vision, hearing screenings, and dental care at no extra cost.
Depending on your state, there may also be additional benefits such as mental health services or home health care available through CHIP programs.
As with any health plan, it’s important to check your state’s specifics before enrolling Children’s Health Insurance Program. This will help you make sure you receive the best possible coverage for your particular needs.

How much is CHIP?
Most medical services that CHIP covers are unpaid. However, some of them need co-payment. Also, some states need to pay a monthly premium of up to 5% of the annual household income.
